A Laurel rainbow in natural colors

Laurel has its own rainbow.

I’m a local artist who has almost always had a camera in my hand. These photographs began as references for my artwork, then grew into a field record of the plants, fungi, lichens, mosses, and freshwater wildlife Nathan and I encounter around the lake. Color often stops me at ground level: Cardinal Flower above a wet bank, an orange newt crossing pale stone, or an Indigo Milk Cap bleeding blue among wet leaves.

The photographs move from cool reds through orange and gold, then from yellow-green into blue and indigo. Violet warms toward pink before the rainbow settles into white, cream, earth brown, gray, charcoal, and black—colors found across the same sandstone banks, wooded slopes, wet openings, decaying logs, and forest floors.

Cumberland Azalea resembles flame azalea, a similarity that helped obscure its identity for years. E. Lucy Braun formally named the red azalea of the Cumberlands Rhododendron cumberlandense in 1941; its type locality is Yahoo Ridge, Kentucky. Across several Laurel encounters, the terrestrial efts hold the same unmistakable orange against pale stream stones, wet rock, and an open hand. Black rings surround brighter orange-red spots along their textured backs, while the wider views show slender legs, narrow toes, and tails curling through the small terrain.

Eastern Newts change palettes as they change habitats. How living color happens

The same hue can come from very different biology.

Pigment, structure, life stage, reflected color, and relationships between organisms can all become visible as color. These eight notes follow the biology behind colors photographed at Laurel.

Red

One berry begins as two flowers.

One red Partridgeberry begins as two separate flowers. Both must be pollinated before the single scarlet fruit develops.

The paired blossoms occur in complementary forms, with stamens and pistils arranged at different heights. Once the berry ripens, its conspicuous red can help an animal find the fruit and carry its seeds elsewhere.

Orange

Orange can appear in petals, fungal tissue, and warning skin.

For an Eastern Newt, orange marks one chapter in a life; the aquatic adult shifts toward olive green.

The juvenile eft’s conspicuous orange is paired with toxin-bearing skin. Cumberland Azalea, Jewelweed, waxcaps, and Chicken of the Woods reach nearby colors through different living structures and chemistry.

Yellow

The yellow was there all along.

Yellow and orange carotenoids are already present in many living green leaves, visually overwhelmed by chlorophyll until that green breaks down.

Carotenoids also help living leaves manage absorbed light. Yellow also appears in flower cells, fungal tissue, pore surfaces, and the branching structures of tiny forest-floor fungi.

Green

A relationship becomes visible.

A fungus builds much of a lichen’s shelter while microscopic algae inside it turn sunlight into food.

Rock Greenshield Lichen spreads across stone as a visible partnership. Research also shows that lichens can include additional yeasts and bacterial communities.

Blue

Blue can be pigment, structure, and reflected light.

Indigo Milk Cap produces an azulene-derived blue pigment, while many fishes produce blue structurally through reflective cells called iridophores.

Inside iridophores, ordered guanine platelets reflect and scatter selected wavelengths. That general fish biology helps explain why the Bluegill and Longear Sunfish move through blue, turquoise, olive, and gold as light and viewing angle change, while the Azure Bluet reaches pale blue through flower chemistry.

Violet

The color depends on who is looking.

Bees perceive ultraviolet, blue, and green portions of the spectrum, so a flower can present patterns beyond human vision.

Petal shape, surface texture, background, scent, nectar, and viewing angle all participate in the signal. Violet is an exchange between a flower and the visual world of the animal approaching it.

White

Living tissue can scatter visible light.

A white petal can appear bright as light repeatedly meets cell walls and tiny air spaces and scatters back toward us.

Petal thickness and anatomy can make white appear matte, waxy, translucent, or luminous. Veins, shadows, centers, and ultraviolet markings carry finer patterns across that pale surface.

Black

Darkness can become armor.

Some fungi build melanin into their cell walls, strengthening cells against radiation, drying, temperature stress, and reactive chemicals.

Wet wood, dense spores, bruised tissue, and shadow reach darkness differently. In melanized fungi, the dark color can be part of the organism’s physical defense.

The colors return to the studio with me.

These photographs began as references for my artwork. Together they form a close-looking ecological portrait of Laurel, while the same flowers, fungi, freshwater life, reflected color, sandstone, and forest structure continue into the work I make for Lakehouse Portrait Co.
