I begin with the color that stopped me, then look closer at form, setting, and what other people have helped me learn.

Fire Pink
Silene virginicaFive narrow scarlet petals split into deep notches, making each flower look cut from a small red star. The wider view keeps those suspended points of color above gray rock, brown leaf litter, and the fresh green of the early-season woods.

Field fact. The deeply notched scarlet petals attract hummingbirds and butterflies, while the plant's sticky hairs can discourage ants from climbing the stem. NC State Extension →

New York Fern
Amauropelta noveboracensisThe tall frame keeps the whole frond readable instead of turning it into a green texture. Its narrow base, divided pinnae, and tapering tip can be followed in one view.

Rosepink
Sabatia angularisThis photograph is all about the center: five pink petals meet a yellow-green star with a thin red edge. The close reference preserves both the flower's color and its geometry.
Field fact. Rosepink spends its first year as a low rosette, then flowers and sets seed in its second. That makes every pink, star-centered bloom the visible finish of a two-year life cycle—and the beginning of the next one. NC State Extension →

Buttonbush
Cephalanthus occidentalisFrom a distance it looks like one white globe. Up close, the long styles turn the flower head into something almost architectural—a useful reference for both identification and drawing.
Field fact. Each Buttonbush globe is a cluster of many small tubular flowers. The shrub is especially well suited to wet places, including streambanks and lake edges, and its flowers attract many pollinators. University of Kentucky →

Downy Rattlesnake Plantain
Goodyera pubescensOne observation holds the pair of white flower spikes. The other brings the evergreen leaf rosette and its silver network into view. Together they make a more useful portrait than either sighting alone.

Field fact. This native orchid grows as a basal rosette. Its evergreen, silver-veined leaves can remain alive for three to four years. USDA Forest Service →

Lanceleaf Frogfruit
Phyla lanceolataThe tiny purplish flower heads are easy to lose among the stones. Leaving the waterline around them in the frame preserves how low the plant grows and how small each flower head really is.
Field fact. On a plant with flower heads this small, the leaves become the stronger clue. Lanceleaf Frogfruit blades are widest at or below the middle, then carry teeth toward the tip—a useful shape for separating it from close relatives. U.S. Geological Survey →

Mountain Laurel
Kalmia latifoliaA cluster of porcelain-white cups rests against glossy, almost black-green leaves. Each flower carries a ring of burgundy pockets and ten curved stamens, so the bloom shifts from soft white at a distance to precise pink-red patterning up close.

Mountain Spleenwort
Asplenium montanumThe close frame preserves the divided fronds; the wider views explain where they fit. Seeing the fern recur in sandstone crevices makes the rock part of the observation instead of background decoration.

Partridgeberry
Mitchella repensI first recorded the low, creeping mat of paired leaves in July. By August, the bright red fruit had become the center of the encounter—and that is the photograph worth holding onto here.
Field fact. Each red Partridgeberry develops from a pair of flowers, so two floral ovaries join in a single fruit. The berry can remain on the evergreen mat into winter. NC State Extension →

Red Maple
Acer rubrumA flat spray of matte green, five-lobed leaves fills the frame. Their slender crimson petioles thread warm color through the surrounding understory, showing where Red Maple carries its name even in summer.
Field fact. In summer, chlorophyll makes green the dominant leaf color while yellow-orange carotenoids remain visually masked. Striped Wintergreen
Chimaphila maculataThe white-striped leaves are the subject, but I like that the photograph also keeps the trail and our dog farther ahead. This is what the search often looks like: moving together until one small pattern asks for a closer look.
Field fact. Striped Wintergreen is an evergreen, rhizomatous member of the blueberry family. Despite its common name, its leaves do not have the minty scent associated with true wintergreen. NC State Extension →

Jellied False Coral Fungus
Sebacina schweinitziiIvory branches rise from russet-brown leaf litter like a small stand of waxy antlers. Four views preserve the blunt cream tips, the branches fused at their base, and the close match between this muted fungus and the dry hardwood floor around it.
Field fact. The coral shape is only the visible part of the story. Its flattened, blunt-tipped branches rise aboveground while the fungus forms a mycorrhizal partnership with hardwood roots below—one small ivory form connected to a much larger forest exchange. Ohio Department of Natural Resources →

Powder-Scale Pholiota
Flammulaster erinaceellusThe tiny caps grade from dark cinnamon at their densely scaled centers to ember orange along thin, translucent margins. Five views move from the whole cluster on fallen hardwood to the bristled cap surface, tawny gills, slender stalks, and decaying substrate.
Field fact. The name erinaceellus means hedgehog-like. Under magnification, the reddish cap is not smooth color at all but a miniature field of erect granules and scales; below it, the fungus is recycling fallen deciduous wood. MushroomExpert →

Red-Eared Slider
Trachemys scripta elegansThe upper shell is deep olive crossed by narrow yellow-green lines, while a vermilion stripe burns behind the eye. Five angles reveal a second palette underneath: a butter-yellow plastron marked with dark rings, then the striped head, patterned carapace, side profile, and the animal's scale.

Color starts the search. Evidence carries it forward.
Color is often what Nathan and I see first—from the boat, along a creek bank, or against moss and leaf litter. I began making these photographs as references for my artwork. Looking from several angles gave them another use: color could lead to structure, habitat, identification, comparison, and a record I could return to.
How living color happens
The same hue can come from very different biology.
A flower, fungus, and animal may all appear orange while arriving there through different chemistry, structure, and purpose. These are a few of the processes behind the colors in my photographs—and the reasons color can be both beautiful and biologically useful.
Flowers mix pigments in living cells.
Anthocyanins contribute many crimson, magenta, violet, and blue hues; carotenoids often contribute lemon yellow through deep orange. The amount and mixture of pigment—and even the chemistry inside a petal cell—can shift the color our eyes receive.

Chlorophyll absorbs light energy for photosynthesis and gives growing leaves their dominant green. Yellow and orange carotenoids may already be present but visually masked; when chlorophyll breaks down, those warmer colors can become visible.

Fungal color can involve carotenoids, melanins, polyketides, and other compounds. Red Chanterelles contain a mixture of carotenoids, with canthaxanthin as a major component; other fungal melanins can produce black, brown, or red tones and help protect cells from environmental stress.

Butterfly color lives on scales.
Tiger swallowtails carry bold yellow-and-black pigment patterns on thousands of overlapping wing scales. In other butterflies, microscopic ridges and layers on those scales can return selected wavelengths of light, producing structural blues that shift with the viewing angle.

Some bright color is a message.
The Eastern Newt's terrestrial eft stage ranges from reddish brown to brilliant red-orange. That conspicuous color is aposematic—a warning that accompanies toxin-bearing skin—so the little ember moving across a wet forest floor is also communicating with potential predators.

Featured detailed entries
The closer view usually matters.
A pore surface, a crowded ring of stamens, the way a mushroom joins a tree, or a correction from another observer can change the whole encounter.

Shaggy-Stalked Bolete
I made three separate observations that day. The lead photograph holds the beautiful pair; the other views move between records—a single bolete tucked beneath moss, a close cap-and-pore profile, a low forest-floor angle, and the pore surface itself. Together they show much more than five similar portraits of one subject.

Mountain Camellia
One broad white flower opens against deep green leaves, its slightly cupped petals holding a dense burst of butter-yellow stamens. The wider photograph keeps that bright summer bloom connected to the shaded, rich-cove understory around it.

Great Blue Heron
Three views hold the heron at the waterline: first the full bird against the wooded rock, then the fallen trunks, exposed roots, and shallow edge around it. The setting shows how completely the bird's gray-blue plumage belongs to this shoreline.

Lynx Paw Oyster
I found it emerging from a dark hardwood cavity. Three views show the cap, gills, attachment point, and the tree itself—the part of the encounter a single attractive angle would have missed.

Ghost Pipe
The pale stems were only a little higher than the leaves around them. I made three photographs because the plants changed as I moved lower: first a light shape in litter, then a cluster with curved flower heads.
Field fact. Ghost pipe is a flowering plant, not a fungus. It has no chlorophyll and gets sugars through mycorrhizal fungi associated with tree roots; it is in the same plant family as heathers and cranberries. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew →

Some finds nearly disappear into leaf litter or wet stone. Others stop me immediately. What they share is the closer look: another angle, a remembered name, or the feature a first photograph missed.

White-Pored Chicken of the Woods
Laetiporus cincinnatusThe orange clusters were impossible to overlook from the lake cove where the creek comes in. To reach them, I climbed about sixty feet up a near-vertical bank. The photographs move from broad salmon-orange rosettes edged in cream to layered upper surfaces, a white pore surface underneath, and the mushrooms rising near buried hardwood roots. A mycologist friend later confirmed the white-pored species shown in these views.
Field fact. White-Pored Chicken of the Woods can fruit from buried hardwood roots, which is why a broad orange rosette may appear to rise directly from the forest floor. Its cool cream-white underside separates it visually from yellow-pored relatives. USDA Forest Service study →

Pink Lady's Slipper
Cypripedium acaulePink Lady's Slippers were a bucket-list plant for me, and I knew what these two were the moment I saw their paired fans of deeply pleated blue-green leaves. Both were past bloom, low against the brown needles and leaf litter of an acidic hemlock-deciduous grove. Seeing the rose-pink pouch-shaped flower in the wild remains on my bucket list.
Field fact. A Pink Lady's Slipper begins with a partnership. Its dustlike seed carries no food reserve, so a compatible soil fungus must nourish it before the seedling can make its own sugars and eventually produce that unmistakable pink pouch. University of New Hampshire Extension →

Red Chanterelle
Cantharellus cinnabarinusOne saturated cinnabar cap divides into curled lobes beside wet gray stone. Three views move from that bright cap to the blunt orange ridges beneath it and then out to the tiny fruiting bodies scattered through brown leaves, twigs, and rock.
Field fact. The cinnabar color comes from pigments within the fruiting body: this chanterelle contains a mixture of carotenoids, with canthaxanthin as a major component. Yellow Chanterelles
Cantharellus minorI love the yellow chanterelles. This record begins with one brilliant little fruiting body, then widens to show the cluster and the scatter across moss, wet leaves, and pine needles. Those wider views preserve how small they were and how they appeared across the forest floor.
Field fact. C. minor lives up to its name: it is almost always under five centimeters and is typically brilliant lemon yellow. Downy Yellow False Foxglove
Aureolaria virginicaThree views hold the whole yellow-and-green structure together: a flared, lemon-yellow trumpet, rounded buds, paired leaves, and a stem softened by fine down. The close view makes the plant's common name visible.
Field fact. This green plant makes its own food by photosynthesis, but it also attaches to white-oak roots for part of its water and nutrients—a strategy called hemiparasitism. NC State Extension →

Sharpwing Monkeyflower
Mimulus alatusA small violet-purple trumpet opens from a square green stem above wet, sharply toothed leaves. Water beads on the foliage, while the seep and shaded bank explain the cool, saturated place where it was growing.

Cucumber Root
Medeola virginianaTwo tiers of green leaves make this small forest plant look carefully arranged: a broad lower whorl, a smaller upper whorl, and a slender stem rising beside emerald moss, wet copper-brown leaves, and decaying wood.
Field fact. The cucumber name is hidden underground in the rhizome, while the most visible clue is overhead: a flowering stem usually carries two leaf whorls, commonly three leaves above and six to ten below. NC State Extension →

Stalked Puffball-in-Aspic
Calostoma cinnabarinumUntil August 1, I had never noticed a stalked puffball-in-aspic. I recorded several that afternoon. These five field views circle the red spore sac and ribbed stalk, then pull back to keep the clear, aspic-like material, bright moss, and wet forest litter together.
Field fact. Despite its common name and puffball-like shape, DNA studies place Calostoma in the Boletales—the same fungal order as boletes—and outside the true puffball lineages. Mycologia study →

Eastern Newt
Notophthalmus viridescensThe red-orange eft lies across mottled tan and charcoal stones with four small legs spread wide, a long tail curling like a hook, and two rows of scarlet spots ringed in black running down its textured back.
Field fact. Eastern Newts change palettes as they change habitats. Aquatic larvae are yellowish green; terrestrial juveniles range from reddish brown to brilliant red-orange; and aquatic adults become olive green, dark green, or yellow-brown above with a yellowish belly. Common Jewelweed
Impatiens capensisThe sharpest flower view comes first: a suspended tangerine-orange pouch freckled with rust-red spots, ending in a slender curved spur. Across two observations, the record moves from that bloom to translucent green stems and then out to the rocky lakeshore among water, stone, and standing snags.
Field fact. A ripe Jewelweed seedpod behaves like a wound spring: a light touch makes its five sections curl back suddenly and fling the seeds. That small burst of stored motion explains the other common name, Touch-Me-Not. University of Minnesota Extension →

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucusThe open wings form a broad lemon-yellow triangle crossed by four velvety black tiger stripes, with powder-blue crescents and two orange spots near the tails. Three more angles preserve the striped side profile, folded wings, sandy ground, and the butterfly's scale against the cove.
Field fact. Butterfly color sits on overlapping wing scales. In this species, those scales form four black tiger stripes across yellow wings; some females instead develop an almost-black form resembling the distasteful Pipevine Swallowtail, a color pattern that may discourage predators. Multiflora Rose
Rosa multifloraClusters of blush-white roses fill the close view, each five-petaled flower opening around a ring of butter-yellow stamens. The second photograph pulls back to show long, arching green canes disappearing into dense growth.

Azure Bluet
Houstonia caeruleaThe flowers were tiny against the moss. Four views move between their pale blue faces, yellow centers, thread-thin stems, and the small patch of forest floor they occupied.

Mottled Wakerobin
Trillium discolorThe mottled leaves held the plant against the leaf litter before the yellow flower opened fully. The bloom places this entry in Yellow & Gold; together, the views preserve bud, open flower, leaf pattern, and the wider group across the forest floor.

Eastern Black Bear
Ursus americanus americanusNear sunset on the north end of Lake Keowee, Nathan and I eased into a steep little cove after deciding to see what was around one more corner. The bear was lying in the water near the bank, cooling off. These distant views keep the golden-green water and the stillness of the whole cove—the part of the encounter that made it unforgettable.
Field fact. South Carolina has a resident black bear population in the mountains and upper Piedmont. Black bears are also strong swimmers and use home ranges that supply food, water, cover, and den sites. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources →

Goat's Rue
Tephrosia virginianaThe flower is two colors at once: a creamy upper petal washed with pink above a deeper rose-pink keel. Fine hairs soften the leaves into a silvery green.
Field fact. This native member of the pea family can add nitrogen to poor soil. Its bicolored flowers also support native bees and the caterpillars of Northern and Southern Cloudywings. NC State Extension →

Velvet-Footed Tap
Tapinella atrotomentosaThis long observation moves around a substantial fungus rather than reducing it to the first broad cap: pale descending gills, a thick dark-brown stalk, the velvety surface that gives it a name, its attachment to decaying wood, and the surrounding forest.
Field fact. The dark “velvet foot” is a genuine identification feature: the thick stalk is covered in brown velvety fuzz, while the pale gills run down toward it. The fungus commonly grows from decaying conifer wood. Binghamton University mycological herbarium →

Great Rhododendron
Rhododendron maximumThe lead view stays with bell-shaped flowers that shade from pearl white to shell pink, each throat stippled with greenish-brown spots. Five more views move through leathery evergreen leaves, the whole shrub, creekside shade, and its larger forest setting.
Field fact. Great Rhododendron is concentrated in the southern Appalachians and blooms later than many other rhododendrons. Its evergreen thickets favor moist, acidic, organically rich forest soils. NC State Extension →

Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio appalachiensisI was with a naturalist when we found this gathering in South Carolina, and she identified them as Appalachian Tiger Swallowtails. The seven photographs are unusually useful together: multiple upper and underside views hold the pale yellow, relatively narrow striping, angular wings, hindwing marks, group behavior, scale, rock shelter, and waterfall hollow.
Field fact. Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail was formally described only in 2002. It resembles Eastern Tiger Swallowtail but tends to be larger and paler, with narrower dark stripes, more angular wings, and rectangular rather than crescent-shaped underside hindwing marks. Southern Sneezeweed
Helenium flexuosumThe small flower carries a lot of contrast: notched yellow rays bend away from a rounded purple-brown center. The second view keeps the bloom connected to the wet bank.

Field fact. What looks like one purple-brown center is actually a rounded disk of many tiny flowers, surrounded by the notched yellow ray flowers. That raised center also helps distinguish Southern Sneezeweed from related species along wet banks. NC State Extension →

Orange Jelly Spot
Dacrymyces chrysospermusI love how these translucent marigold-yellow folds seem to light up against rain-darkened, charcoal-brown bark. Two more views pull back from the soft gelatinous patches to the trunk and then the whole tree.

Red Raspberry Slime Mold
Tubifera ferruginosaThree close views hold the coral-red cushions, individual beadlike units, and wet decaying wood together. The color and crowded surface explain the raspberry name before the caption does.

Field fact. This is a slime mold, not a fungus. The raspberry-like cushion is a crowd of tightly packed, spore-producing structures, and its color works like a clock: young cushions begin coral pink to red, then deepen toward rusty brown as their spores mature. Club-Like Tuning Fork
Calocera corneaThe magnified view reveals a tiny yellow colony that might otherwise read as flecks of color on bark. Each slick club rises only a short distance from the decaying hardwood.

Eastern Cauliflower Mushroom
Sparassis spathulataThe cream-colored fruiting body rises as a dense fountain of thin, curled ribbons. Its overlapping folds look more like ruffled leaves, noodles, or pale coral than a cap standing on a stem.

Rock Greenshield Lichen
Flavoparmelia baltimorensisThe shield-like patch spreads in pale yellow-green lobes across dark stone. Its surface is not smooth: small coarse bumps give the green a broccoli-like texture.
Field fact. Rock Greenshield is foliose—a leaflike lichen with lobes that lift from the surface instead of forming a flat crust. Hollow Joe-Pye Weed
Eutrochium fistulosumThe photograph keeps the whole architecture: a tall green stem, long leaves in whorls, and a cloud of dusty pink flowers held above the wet opening.

Common Earthball
Scleroderma citrinumTwo brown earthballs repeat the rounded forms of the wet leaves around them while the narrow white rush of water locates the encounter at the creek edge.
Field fact. Earthballs form spores inside a thick, enclosed rind. As they mature, the pale interior darkens to purple-brown and the rind breaks open to release the powdery spores. NC State Extension →

Pink-Striped Oakworm Moth
Anisota virginiensisWarm ochre wings fade toward translucent amber at their edges, crossed by cinnamon-brown lines and a muted rose-pink wash. The moth resting across a hand gives those thin, softly colored wings an immediate scale.
Field fact. The name belongs to a different life stage: the caterpillar wears pink stripes, while the adult appears in ochre, brown, and rose. Ornate-Stalked Bolete
Retiboletus ornatipesA rounded olive-yellow cap sits above a thick golden stalk wrapped in a raised, netlike pattern, all standing upright from copper-brown leaf litter. The texture is pronounced enough that the common name reads clearly in one portrait.
Field fact. The golden net is raised tissue, not a flat marking. Mycologists call that three-dimensional pattern reticulation; in this species, its depth and yellow-to-olive color are central field characters. USDA Forest Service research →

Cumberland Azalea

The flowers shift from warm apricot at their throats to saturated red-orange along their flared, ruffled edges. Long orange-red stamens extend beyond the petals, while wider views keep the two flowering plants against fresh green leaves and a wooded, layered rock bank. I have only ever noticed these two plants. When I shared the photographs with Facebook natural-history communities, the Cumberland Azalea identification was validated numerous times.
Field fact. This is not flame azalea, although the resemblance helped obscure its identity for years. E. Lucy Braun formally named the red azalea of the Cumberlands Rhododendron cumberlandense in 1941; its type locality is Yahoo Ridge, Kentucky.
