Great Laurel changes the feeling of an Appalachian cove. It gathers along cool creeks and moist mountain slopes, forming passages of leaf, branch, bloom, and filtered light.
I kept the water from becoming background; it reflects the flowers, reveals the stones below the surface, and opens the depth beneath the branches. Part of the Appalachian Botanicals collection, the piece is rooted in native rhododendron habitat and the feeling of finding a place older than the path that led to it.
The vertical composition follows the canopy down into the clear creek below.
