Smallmouth Bass in Clear Water | Freshwater Fish Lake Art

There’s something different about a smallmouth bass in clear water. Before you even feel the fight, you usually see that bronze flash under the surface first — moving through blue and green light just beneath the waterline. That moment was the inspiration behind my painting, Smallmouth Bass in Clear Water.

I’ve always loved the way smallmouth move. They feel alert and aware in a different way than largemouth do to me, especially in clear rivers and lakes where you can actually watch them holding against current or drifting through shifting sunlight. If you’ve ever thrown a topwater lure over calm water and watched one rise from below, you probably know the exact feeling I mean.

This piece came from those quiet blue-water moments where the surface reflects sky and shoreline at the same time, breaking the fish into flashes of bronze, olive, aqua, and light. I wanted the painting to feel calm and alive at once — still enough to live peacefully in a room, but with enough movement that your eye keeps wandering through the water.

A lot of my work is rooted in time spent around lakes and rivers with my family. Sometimes I’m taking reference photos while Nathan fishes. Sometimes we’re drifting slowly along a bank watching light move across sandstone or trees reflected in the water. Those moments stay with me long after we leave, and they tend to find their way into paintings later.

I also love how well freshwater wildlife artwork works in interiors when it’s handled with a softer, more painterly approach. This isn’t meant to feel like a loud “sportsman” piece. The goal for me was something more atmospheric and reflective — a painting that still feels connected to fishing and the outdoors, but also calming enough for a lake house, cabin, study, entryway, or even a quiet bathroom with natural light.

The square composition helped with that balance too. The fish moves diagonally through the painting, but the water itself keeps everything softened and suspended. I wanted the clear blues and warm bronze tones to feel soothing together, especially printed large on gallery-wrapped canvas where the reflected light has room to breathe.
