Great Laurel Over Clear Creek is about one of my favorite kinds of Appalachian places: cool shade, mosses, ferns, creek stones, and rhododendron branches leaning over clear water. We always called them rhododendrons, and I am still amazed by the native white blooms. The flowers are bright, but the pull of this piece is the place around them. Great Laurel can make a creek feel hidden even when you are standing close to it. The water moves quietly underneath the evergreen cover, catching pale reflections, stone color, and filtered light.
