Keowee Bear at Day’s End — Black Bear Gallery-Wrapped Canvas Print
Deep green water, a steep cove, and one black bear resting at the edge of Lake Keowee hold this evening scene together. Golden reflected light moves across the shallows while pale stone and dense mountain foliage keep the bear inside the place rather than apart from it.
The artwork began with a real spring-break encounter while Nathan and I were fishing on Lake Keowee. We were about to head in when I asked to see what was around one more corner. There, below voices coming from a house farther up the bank, a huge dark animal lay cooling in the water.
At first we mistook it for someone’s very large black dog. As our boat drifted closer, the shape resolved into a bear resting in the lake at day’s end as naturally as if no one were watching. The wide composition keeps the cove, reflected light, and bear together.

Leading water color: Deep lake green. Subject and reflected light: Black bear and warm gold. Supporting bank tones: Olive green, pale stone, warm sand, rhododendron green, soft cream, and forest shadow.
