Keowee Bear at Day’s End: A Bucket-List Wild Black Bear Sighting
A bucket-list black bear sighting became a Lake Keowee canvas print about quiet water, golden reflections, and one unforgettable evening in a steep little cove.
During spring break in early April, Nathan and I were out fishing on the north end of Lake Keowee near sunset and getting ready to head back in. He asked if I wanted to go on back, and I said, "let's just see what's around the next corner first."
We eased around the point into another little cove and saw a big black animal lying in the water near the bank. At first, because we could hear people talking at a nearby house, we honestly thought it might be someone's dog.
As we drifted closer, we realized it was a huge black bear just quietly lying in the water, cooling off at day's end.
The Kind Of Wildlife Moment You Do Not Plan
We stayed still and watched for a long time. The bear barely cared we were there. Eventually it slowly stood up, shook off, gruffled a little, and walked back into the woods like we had interrupted its evening routine.
It was one of the most special wildlife encounters I have ever had. I had wanted to see a bear in the wild for years, and somehow it happened completely unexpected from the boat, tucked back in a steep little Keowee cove with the water turning gold and green around us.
So I painted it.
What I Wanted To Preserve
The water reflections and quiet mood were the biggest things I wanted to preserve because that was what made the moment feel so surreal in person. It was not just that a bear was there. It was the way the whole cove seemed to hold still around it.
Keowee Bear at Day's End is built around deep lake green, black bear, golden reflection, olive shoreline, pale stone, warm sand, soft cream, and forest shadow. The bear is present, but the whole cove matters.
